WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT - OVERVIEW
Workforce development is one of the key program areas of. The Local Government Practice Unit (LGPU) conducts the workforce development program for LGMA and Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG) as a strategic partner. Its purpose is to formulate a national workforce development strategy and related measures to assist in addressing the sector’s workforce challenges by building capacity and capability, and making local government a national employer of choice.
In alignment with the National Workforce strategy, without duplicating or competing with existing initiatives, the LGPU aims to develop and operate programs, relevant tools and resources, in order to:
- Address workforce and skills issues and fill gaps;
- Develop new talent pools for the LG sector;
- Ensure the sector is supported by an appropriately skilled workforce; and
- Have LG broadly regarded as a national employer of choice.
In support of those objectives and the implementation of the National Workforce Strategy, the LGPU is engaged in a number of projects and activities, including:
- The convening of:
Annual Workforce Development Forums
Annual Indigenous Employment Roundtables
Meetings of the Workforce Development Reference Group
- Promoting the Indigenous Employment Position Paper and related good practice
- Developing research projects and case studies such as Language, Literacy and Numeracy, Community Chef and the Mature Talent Project.
