The LGMA International Mentor Program been developed to help young people in Nepal and Cambodia build a bright future and learn about business, management, government and leadership from experienced local government professionals in Australia.
LGMA National works in partnership with Build Bright University in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Safe Nepal in Kathmandu, Nepal and Coaching and Mentoring International in Melbourne, to deliver the program.
As an international, cross-cultural program, the Program is focused on creating strong links across international and sectoral borders. It is a chance for both mentors and mentees to learn about the lives and culture of their partner in a different country.
Value
Many of us have had someone in our lives who has guided, supported and advised us – a mentor. Young people in developing countries often don’t have anyone in their lives to play this role, to support their decision-making and inform future development. Many have received a sound education, but may not know how to best use it resourcefully. These young people are also hungry to learn about the way western countries operate and are governed. Encouragement from a mentor, whose experiences enable them to broaden mentees' options, can help them to plan for a brighter future.
Online communication and social media are the norm in many developing countries. Tech-savvy, English-speaking youths can readily participate in a mentoring relationship built on online communication. With sound structures, clear expectations and agreed rules between mentoring partners, sustainable and life-altering results can be gained for the young mentees.
What previous participants say about the program
“It is the best program I have ever come across, because it helps [grow] the ideas that I never think of. Ideas are more important than money because they make people go in the right direction!” Mentee Bhuvan Pathak, Nepal.
“The program reminded me that often the challenges we face in life are universal and regardless of culture we are all striving to do the best we can, with the cards we're dealt.” Mentor Deirdre Griepsma, Manager Natural Environment Sustainability, Latrobe City Council, Victoria.
LGMA National International Mentor Program 2014
Between July and November 2014, Australian local government professionals will be paired with young mentees in Cambodia, Myanmar and Nepal, in the third LGMA International Mentor Program, following its great success in 2013. Mentors are experienced leaders and practitioners from councils throughout Australia. Mentees aged 22 to 35 come from various backgrounds with the focus is on the development of the individual, and their communities in Nepal, Myanmar or Cambodia.
Mentors are tasked with helping their mentee explore all options for a brighter future, for both themselves and their communities. Follow the Program on our Facebook page
